I thought we would be "cycling up the Danube" but the Euro Velo #6 doesn't have many views of the river, to be honest. The embankment in Hungary is lovely and smooth and the trees between the river and the embankment are gorgeous. Much of the land is marked as a park / bird sanctuary. We did see the river once.
Marc mentioned that the weather app predicted a week of good weather!
We rode in Baja (Hungary!) And found lunch. The streets were cobblestone, well actually more like cobble-boulder in places, but what the heck, it keeps you out of your seat 😉
We saw a Tesco and discussed stopping for more provisions, but decided to push on, dinner and bed were not far off..
Just after lunch, the thunder rolled in and the skies opened. Yes! We have carried our rain gear for a reason! We actually got back on the route and had a tail wind and out paced the rain... We were flying along. Look at us go. Right by the town we were planning to eat and sleep in. Oops. With a tail wind like that you are not turning around.
Plan B. Phone battery running low but we see beach houses and places for the night across the river at Boni-Fok (tee hee, sounds dirty) so across we go, down a long gravel road with many forks. We tried them all, pretty much. No luck finding anyone or anything and then we found Veronica! Our travel angel of the day. She helped us find the rental owner and translated for us. And we end up in a cute little beach house with a view of the Danube!
Turns out the closest restaurant is 15 k (each way) and the closest store is further. And the rain caught up to us. So, we are making the most of the few provisions we have - breakfast for dinner, with a side of salami and bread (Oh how I would love one of those little packets of mustard right now 😳)
The joys of travel ☺️
Our little place on the Danube is lovely.
