Day 15 - May 19 - A Cool Start

Well last night was an amazing adventure.

A Warm Shower contact helped us find a place to stay, asking his friend Istavan to allow us to camp in his garden.  Istavan was kind and cycled to the town square to escort us to his property. He spoke no English, we speak no Hungarian, but he asked a neighbor and his girlfriend, Lidia, over and they spoiled us.

First we pitched the tent in the freshly cut grass, and then Lidia appeared with a table and bench, and an extension cord for charging. The next time she appeared with frying pan of scrambled eggs with sausages and paprika. What a treat! We had both been craving eggs.

Her boyfriend followed with buns (6) bread (2 loaves) and a 2 liter soda. My goodness, the royal treatment!

And they would take nothing in exchange for their kindness.

We slept well, but we were so glad to have our base layers. The temperature dipped to 7. The toques were worn and the quilts were clipped!

We awoke to more bread and Kefir awaiting us as Istavan had left for work before 6 but thought to leave us breakfast. Imagine. Such kindness.

And would you believe we crossed paths with him on the road as we left town so we could wave and shout our thank yous

köszönöm!!

What a beautiful day of cycling.

Through small villages, that all seem to be in valleys, and then we would climb back out. We are getting our climbing legs for Austria!

This afternoon we cycled on shade-sprinkled smooth roads through Orsegi Nemseti Park, the perfect riding temperature and conditions. So few cars and any that come along are careful and patient.

We even had ice cream today!

Good marketing, with the brand name SMILE!

We came along a hiker in the road. He was chatty and interested in our trip. First time that has happened. We are still so surprised at the limited number of cyclists and hikers we are finding.

We did have some serious head wind (note grass behind my bike!) But the wind Gods seemed to take pity on the hills and often helped push us up.

A very pretty ride as we get close to the Austrian border.

  1. Amazing. Can only assume you will be leading a “WARM SHOWERS” delegation in Toronto when home. Impressive.
