Day 18 - Beaugeay

The Euro Velo 1 really hugs the beach here. The path is just in from the beach, and surrounded by trees for shade, and paved (although those trees roots can cause some bumps and they are hard to see in the speckled shade). And then every 500m or so there is a little sand path down to the beach.

The bike path

And the path to the beach

We stopped and enjoyed the beach view a few times.

There were these signs, which were nice warnings of bumpy trails, the cute thing was they just kept appearing, 1,8 km and then 2,3 km and then 5,6 km. So seriously, we get it, the whole path is bumpy 🤣

Very cool fishing huts.

And lovely views of the dunes and low tide.

Our second breakfast stop was in a little beach community where the local we asked for directions would not say which bakery he prefers, so we went to the one we could find. Based on the line up, I think we chose well.

We climbed across quite a large bridge, and found another lovely beach spot for lunch before we headed inland.

The turn inland proved to be fascinating. We didn't know what all the blue on the map could be??

Hard to capture in photos as it was a flat salt marsh. So many birds, and canals of still water. Very nice peaceful ride through several kms of these fields and water ways, with cows and horses grazing and a few other cyclists, and so many birds.

And we ended up at Camping de la Cigogne (which translates to Stork - we saw a few in the marshes today!) in this lovely old town of Beaugeay.

We had time to make a nice meal and have a wander through the old town before hopping in the tent as the light rain started.

The roses are so incredibly beautiful here. In everyone's gardens.

And I did stop to smell them!

  1. Dining at a table with chairs? Luxury! Loved the coastal photos (especially the ones with the bikes in the frame) and the marsh photos. Beautiful roses too!

  2. Salut.

Must be lovely cycling by the beaches. Ah that fresh beach air.

Good to know the campgrounds are reasonably priced.

    Keep on pedaling!

  3. Yes — where did the tables and chairs came from? So impressed how much you’ve covered!

    1. That little country campground had lots of tables and chairs, which was huge for us. They don't get that every site with a tent needs a table. That is normal in North America. Usually we spread our giant piece of tyvek on the ground and picnic. It works too.

  4. Looks like a few others found the same spot. Those baguette saangwiches look amazing. Love that you can just go to a new spot and find a bakery nestled in every community. Did you hit the 1,000 km mark Marc? What is the small hut behind- looks like a YURT or is that the WC? Also now suddenly seeing that the tent is fairly small- I’m more used to the stand up 5 person tent for 2!!! Keep on rolling and love the shots… hope there is sun and warmer weather around the corner. Bruni
