June 26 - Day 22 - Tour de Bretagne

We said goodbye to Saint Malo and our lovely apartment and hit the road early. The ride out along the coast and then into some lovely hills and farm land was enjoyed under some high clouds. It is warm, so we were happy for clouds.

But the hills didn't last and we were by the seashore again. A long flat ride today.

We cycled near Cancale and it was all about oysters. The seashore was crowded with oyster processors and restaurants offering VERY fresh oysters.

Below, empty oyster shells / pieces were coming out of the plant on a conveyor belt and being loaded into the truck.

The two kinds.

The path along the beach was a sandy, dusty path, with quite a few other cyclists and hikers. Our bikes and ourselves got quite a layer of dust, even with the cool ocean breeze.

Once we were thoroughly covered in dust, the trail took a turn inland and we found the coolness of the shade.

And then..... off in the distance.... as we cycled along the river / canal, we saw...... Mont St Michel!!!

And tomorrow we will head there to explore. In the meantime we are at the campground near the hotels and restaurants. It is very touristy here, not a grocery store to be found! But lots of souvenirs, and a few cows 🙃.

Apparently we got the last campsite for tents. Should be a fun night with all these fellow-velos. Our neighbors are from Montreal. Non.. Oui!!!
(Blue arrow is us the ones without a fly.)

Our hottest day yet for sure.  For dinner we found a food truck serving delicious Afghani food, a table in the shade and a beer. Life is good.

Strava stats for the day.
60k + a layer of dust.

Leave us a comment, we love to know who is reading along.

  1. Great pics as always - specially the cows :)
Good plan to get all the climbing out of the way in the first hour.

  2. Ah down to the nitty gritty, the dust that is. Hope the campground had good showers. Such a flat ride day, good for all the kms you did, but something tells me that no elevation today will mean extra in your future at some point.

Mont St. Michel looks like something right out of a fairy tale. Enjoy exploring it tomorrow. Bet you'll have great views!

I'm curious as to why your paths and campgrounds are getting busier... is it because of the flat seaside riding terrain? is it because of the sightseeing opportunities/touristy areas (St. Malo, Mont St. Michel, oysters, beach, etc)? is it because it's late June and people are starting to take summer holidays? Or maybe a little of each?

    1. The showers were great. Walked right in fully clothed and did laundry and showering all in one go. And with the heat, the full kit was dry before bed.
Increased tourism is a combination of end of school year (so many school trips and family vacations), the proximity to the ferries from England and Ireland, and the allure of Mont St Michel - UNESCO Heritage site. It is right on the dividing line between Normandy and Brittany and bitter Bretons say tourists come here and "think they have been to Bretagne".
