June 15 - Day 11 - Tour de Bretagne

We made it to Roscoff. That feels like an accomplishment, to reach "the top".

We had to withstand quite a bit of rain. Waking up we had to dodge the rain to make breakfast, to pack up, and to roll up the tent. We had shelter for breakfast, and waited there until we saw a clearing.

And it was cold!

There were several stops to find shelter from extreme down pours.

We passed through one town and the skies opened so we found a tree and a path for cover.

The next thing we knew, a mountain biker, followed by a young boy on a new bike, came cycling up the hill out of nowhere, covered in dirt, and grinning. They were out for their Saturday ride! Too fun. Rain wasn't stopping them. They stopped to chat and then carried on, you can just see in this photo, them taking the path into the church.

We cycled mostly roads today, flower lined and rolling hills, and through rural areas with magnificent old churches.

We went by this Seminary (Saint Jacques) at noon and the chapel bells were lovely to hear.

And then for the 1 o'clock bells we were in Lampaul-Guimiliau, where we had our lunch standing in the doorway of their Mairie (Town Hall), to once again avoid a downpour

Onward we pushed and came into the lovely old cobblestoned town of Saint Pol de Leon.

Only 3.6 kms to Roscoff. Sounds great! But they were up and down and winding around on a bike path that went between gardens, through fields and practically across front door steps. We saw an artichoke field! And we smelled (cried) our way through two onion fields.

I had one little tumble into a stone wall when the path became so narrow and rocky that I tried to stop, but my bike shoe would not come off my pedal.

Luckily Marc got the pebble out of my clip and saved the day!

But I still needed a pick me up so we went to a Salon de The and had an afternoon treat. We needed to rest, warm up and dry out, and a table by the window to watch our bikes was perfect.

Roscoff was a busy place, with tourists, hikers, and a wedding party honking their way through town, so fun!

We are now settled into a campsite by the sea. We have lots of great hedges to shelter us from the ever present wind. And the sun has actually come out even if AccuWeather told us not to expect it.

Strava stats, the kms keep coming, hill after hill.

Good night

  1. Wow- such nice little towns, villages and that’s a lot of euros to complete that bridge! Pastries look great- wishing you better weather… doing a jig to bring you more sunshine.

  2. Comment from Duff:

"We are not at our best perched at the summit.
We are at our best when the way is steep."

Sounds like a challenging day with the rain, and the hills, and the rock in bike shoe clip. I hope tomorrow is a little by more cyclist-friendly.

In the meantime, yay for tea & pastries and sunshine at the end of the day!

  3. Challenging day! Bike shoe not coming off pedal is nightmare stuff. And Marc looks so cold in all the pics. Way to go in slogging through. Glad tea and goodies appeared when needed.

But wow - fields full of artichokes!! So cute - I've never even considered them growing that way. And those beautiful pink flowers on the roadside.

Seems like a good metaphor of life in one day - pleasure and pain balancing are both necessary. Hope you had a good sleep in your lovely campsite!

  4. The artichokes were a surprise, yes! We had never seen them in a field. Very cool.
