When is 35 KMs not 35 KMs?

...when there is 500+ metres of elevation and long stretches of rocky gravel. We have set moderate goals day by day so that we don't create a sufferfest. This kind of surface is great for the new wave of gravel riders without panniers. But for us it slows us to around 5 km/hr. The views are fantastic the climbs are challenging and more technical and we can enjoy it because we don't have to ride 60/70 KMs with this as the beginning. All about slowing down and enjoying the ride, less concern for how far, how high, how fast.

  1. Kind of like sailing - going out in gnarly conditions, testing your grit and your gear can be fun when you know you're out for a couple of hours and then going home to a hot shower and a good night's sleep, and it's especially easy when you know you don't have to do it again tomorrow (unless you want to), but when you're travelling, moving through time and space, with your home and all you need for your day-to-day survival for the next weeks or months, pushing the envelope in rough weather or on rough surfaces is not at all appealing, and besides, not very smart. As you say, there's no need for a sufferfest
