Day 31 - Chateau de Chambord

The Chateau de Chambord.  An incredible Chateau, started in September of 1519, using plans developed by Leonardo da Vinci, and undertaken at the direction of Francois I, it was passed along to many others over the centuries. An amazing structure, with a canal, gardens, and 32 kms of stone wall surrounding it, defining the hunting grounds. So much history.

We had a lovely day of exploring, an easy ride there, bicycle parking, lockers for the panniers and a picnic lunch.

An entire photo album could have been shot. Good thing we don't have to buy film anymore. ☺️

Every turn at the chateau was another stunning photo.

Arrival on bikes, we see this from the path in the park...

And then we get closer.

The french flag proudly waving.

There is even a "moat".

The chapel. Simple yet beautiful. Some national art treasures were stored (hidden) here during the second world war, including the Mona Lisa.

And then we climbed the spiral staircase to the top floors.

King Francois I loved to hunt.  And he kept the grounds walled in so the "locals" could not kill "his" game.

Cold in the winter, at one time there were over 400 fireplaces. Today there are "only" 282 remaining - get chopping that wood! A ceramic oven, trying to keep this place warm was not easy.

Admiring the gardens.

The canal. They even offer boat rides still.

Lovely detail, everywhere.

The small, original chapel, build in the remains of a place of worship dating back to Roman times. With a school for girls beside it.

And speaking of small.

Seriously, it was impossible not to take more photos.

And then a picnic lunch that we bought this morning at the little bakery next to our hotel.

Such a wonderful day.

A hotel. What a treat, warmth and sheets, our own shower and a restaurant to eat at.

Feeling full of gratitude.

(Rose from the town hall square.)

Stats.

No idea where that maximum speed on Strava came from (not me!) But the average speed reflects us walking around... ☺️

And now a relaxing evening.  This wine is SO good.

But it does not improve my foosball, suffering a tough 10-4 loss, but, I did score 4!!

Thanks for following along our journey.

  3. What a beautiful place to wander around for a day and what beautiful weather you had for it.
Have to admit though, I'm just as impressed with your 4 points on the foosball table. I'm terrible at that game!
