Day 13 - Jackson to Rocky Springs

Uh oh, Rocky Springs was a little, well, rocky...

We left Jackson in the cold, bundled up for our ride across the city. We caught up with the Trace at Clinton, which allowed us to avoid the notoriously busy section of the Trace between Ridgeland and Clinton.

All good. Navigation was easy, little neighborhoods varied in house size and upkeep, and the roads required mental alertness to avoid holes and the ever present trash. But we found the Trace before 20 kms and we were "on the road again."

No bad weather, just bad clothes. We are lucky to have the right gear for cold so we managed the 75 k today just fine, and the sun shone through every now and then.

Deer, oh dear
We saw many deer today. Some on fields, some crossing the road ahead of us, some running along side with us, and sadly a few that did not look both ways before they crossed the Trace 😥

No restrooms between Jackson and Rocky Springs.
No toilets. No water.
Picnic on the road side for lunch.

Arriving at Rocky Springs we were surprised to find the state of things.

The park office at the entrance.
Closed.  (perhaps even abandoned by the look of it).

The washrooms at the entrance. Closed.

The campground - close to empty - 2 tents up, no people to be seen.

The campground washrooms. Open but....
Water not drinkable. Yikes.

There was no water along the Trace from Jackson to here, and no drinkable water here. ☹️. Thankfully on cold days we don't drink much and we have enough to get us through the night. Looks like 15+ miles tomorrow before we find an off ramp with a store.

Upside. Likely won't have to leave the tent to pee!

Tent up and fire started all before 3 pm. Good thing too, because the rain started at about 3:20.

We shut up the tent flaps and rode ourselves to the welcome structure. There is a roof. And a bench. And we can make our dinner and stay dry until sundown.

We wish we knew the weather forecast to know if the rain might let up for our dash back to our tent.  But alas, no internet service here. Gone with the water I guess.

Thanks Maggie for the what's app message. Rain all night predicted and indeed it did. Till 6:30 am

We are at mile marker 55 of the Trace. Closing in on Natchez.

Stats

cows and goats and deer.
