No biking today.
We thought we'd take the bus.
No buses on Sunday.
So we walked.
From Fondren (the community we are staying in) to downtown Jackson. About 5 km.
Nice way to see a city on a cold sunny day. Apparently Jackson Mississippi was colder than Toronto this morning, reading -1 Celsius, but no snow 😉
It was so quiet on the streets, We enjoyed the architecture and the sunshine.
We spent a few hours at the Civil Rights Museum. Wow. So well done. So important to tell the stories. So overwhelming.
The historical journey takes you on a national timeline, from the arrivals of slaves, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, through to today. Films and recordings and images, ending with Where Do We Go From Here, with images and quotes from voices of today.
The circular museum leads you around history, and repeatedly brings you into the central room, the heart of the museum, honouring the civil rights activists who gave their lives for the cause. Music plays, radiating from the light structure, and the volume increases based on the number of people in the room. It is very moving.
The mural outside the museum honours Jackson as the City with Soul.
The capital building is beautiful. But also closed on Sunday.
I am on a catfish quest. Ordering it everywhere. Gotta be honest, the little restaurant back in Collinwood still has the gold medal, but I have enjoyed them all.
Back to our neighborhood (with the help of a Lyft) for some Sunday football, the Brazilian F1, and repacking.
Tomorrow we are outta here. Rocky Springs here we come.
